Over the weekend, I embarked on a delightful journey to the heart of London's West End, where I had the pleasure of seeing La Bamba: a musical. This was the first time going to see musical theatre and it did not disappoint!

The main reason I attended this musical was none other than the amazing Siva Kaneswaran, who graced the stage in the role of Mateo. As an admirer of Siva's talents, it was only fitting that I ventured forth to support him for his debut in the realm of musical theatre.
"La Bamba" is a jukebox musical, paying homage to the legendary Richie Valens, the Rock 'n' Roll icon. At its core, the narrative follows the journey of Sofia, a remarkable character brought to life with sheer brilliance by the immensely talented Inês Fernandez. Sofia's story is a tapestry woven with threads of fame, real-world tribulations, the specter of mortality, and the global pandemic (I promise, no more spoilers here!). The selected music was rich from various genres, from R&B to rock, pop and latin rhythms. Although the storyline was somewhat somber, the music provided an enchanting, lighthearted dimension to the narrative.
While I lay no claim to expertise in critiquing musicals—this being my first experience— I have a deep love for the arts and have a history of attending numerous musical events. Allow me to start by expressing the sheer brilliance of the entire cast, whose fantastic dance routines left me utterly spellbound. Their movements on stage appeared as effortless as breathing, a testament to their passion for their craft. The vocal prowess of Inês Fernandez, Stefani Ariza (portraying Elena, Sofia's mother), and Siva Kaneswaran reverberated through the theatre, providing an unforgettable sonic experience. A special mention must be made for the astonishingly talented band, positioned beneath the stage—comprising Mike Todd, James Dibble, Louis Reilly, Ben Burton, and Ruby Barber—whose musical talent was nothing short of enlivening.
I had the privilege of witnessing this musical spectacle not once, but twice. As the intermission of my second viewing dawned, a wave of sadness washed over me, realizing that there was one more hour of this captivating performance left. Clocking in at a duration of 2 hours and 40 minutes, "La Bamba" managed to defy the constraints of time, feeling like an enchanting dream.
In my humble estimation, "La Bamba" is deserving of nothing less than a five-star rating. It tugs at the heartstrings, weaving in political themes and death, all while sprinkling the narrative with moments of amusing jokes and an unforgettable soundtrack—complemented by an ensemble of exceptionally gifted performers.
For those fortunate enough to secure a ticket, I wholeheartedly recommend seizing this opportunity. As of today, "La Bamba" graces the stages of London (until September 2nd), Swansea (September 5th-9th), Brighton (September 19th-23rd), Coventry (September 26th-30th), Stoke-on-Trent (October 3rd-7th), Cardiff (October 10th-14th), Torquay (October 17th-21st), Swindon (October 24th-28th), Dartford (October 31st-November 4th), York (November 7th-11th), and Blackpool (November 21st-25th). Don't miss your chance to be swept away by this musical masterpiece—it's an experience not to be missed.
