BOOK CLUB: How to kill men and get away with it by Katy Brent

Writer: rebecca selleckrebecca selleck

This book caught my attention because I enjoy crime, mystery and murderous type of books. Since getting back into reading, this book has taken me the longest to read. I'll be honest by saying I didn't really enjoy it at the start. I felt like it jumped too much and we missed out times which could've added a lot to the plot but as I persevered I ended up really enjoying this book and was living for the massive twist at the end. I couldn't find any questions specifically for this book so we've gone for generic book club questions today.

1. What was your favourite part of the book?

The ending twist. I love a book with a good twist and throughout reading I didn't think we'd get one. I didn't find myself reaching for this book as much as I liked but I'm glad I carried on reading because the twist was crazy. I felt like the dad (James) going to jail literally the next day after he tried it with Kitty was a little strange and doesn't seem likely in real life - it felt sped up and unrealistic however I really did not expect her friend Hen to be so crazy and nuts. I feel like the way this book ended allows for another book on the future of Kitty and the girls - maybe she gets caught out? Who knows.

2. What was your least favourite part of the book?

For me it was how unrealistic this book was. I understand it's a book and is not real. But there was no fantasy about this book like witches and angels and dragons etc. It's set in London and is about an instagram model who likes to kill. It was really 'real life' when it came to the characters, the locations etc and it just seemed bizarre to me that Kitty never got pulled up on the fact she had connections with every single man who went missing / was found murdered. Especially when some of those men happened to be murdered abroad, in the exact location she was in. The entire point of the book was how to kill them AND get away with it however I feel like Kitty being bought into the police station or something to discuss these connections would've fit in with the realism. Obviously they do speak to her about the football players bother however it's only because she was named with him. With a murder investigation they would've found all the connections with the previous men. The CCTV with the first man in the bar. The tinder chats with the second guy etc. I think I prefer my books either complete realism or total fantasy.. so yeah. This bugged me a lot.

3. Did you race to the end, or was it more of a slow burn?

Definitely a slow burn. As mentioned I struggled to get into this book for the first half but as I also mentioned, I'm glad I did. The book didn't turn out as horrible as I thought it would be. During the last few chapters I was racing it for sure because I enjoy those twists and turns we don't expect.

4. Would you want to read another book by this author?

I think so. Overall I enjoyed this book so I'd give the author another shot.

5. What surprised you most about the book?

The fact Kitty, the main character, the killer, was an instagram model. It doesn't state anywhere that's who she is on the outside of the book so when I started reading I was a bit shocked. The book had lots of designer clothing mentioned and talks about instagram influencing which I clearly have no clue about so I was confused, and designer clothing really isn't my thing. Because it didn't say this anywhere before reading I was surprised. I think I was more surprised how a semi-famous instagram influencer was able to kill all these men without being caught.

6. How does the book's title work in relation to the book's contents? If you could give the book a new title, what would it be?

The title says it all really. She kills men and gets away with it however the title makes it seem like a guidebook - not for actually killing people obviously. But I had expected more "and this is why I do it this way" etc but there wasn't much of that. Another title could maybe relate to killing scumbag men and the drama surrounding her life but honestly I don't think any titles I'd come up with would be any good.

7. Is this book overrated or underrated?

Unfortunately I'm going to have to say overrated. It was listed as a best seller on Amazon - which is how I found it. But I really didn't see the hype. Reading this book did connect with me regarding creepy men. As women we know exactly how it is when walking late at night or waiting for a bus or even ordering a taxi. We are constantly looking over our shoulder and have to question every man we past. I understand that some reviews I read stated this also and created more of a connection with them towards the book. However the main point of the book to me was about a girl who enjoyed murdering. It's a good book for the meaning of the book however I believe with the flaws in the writing... it's a little overrated.

8. Would you ever consider re-reading it? Why or why not?

Probably not. Only because I know exactly what happens. Obviously that is the case with every book however for me I didn't enjoy the read through with this book as much as others so I don't think I'd find enjoyment in reading this again.

9. Are there lingering questions from the book you're still thinking about?

YES! There's so many plot holes in my opinion and I want answers! Firstly, what the hell are the police doing? Why did they not find the connection between every guy murdered and Kitty. Secondly, the men she killed when she was on holiday. It was announced they were missing but did they ever find the bodies / declare them as murdered? If so would this have changed the outcome for Kitty in her killing sprees? Thirdly, how did no one notice the security cameras kept turning off in the factory where Kitty was grinding down her victims? Surely someone would've noticed. Even though she would clean up - Wouldn't the workers in the morning wonder why the floor didn't dry overnight? And let's not ignore the fact she would put humans into this machine and then say how they'd end up as a sausage or something. This is mental to me?! Are there no factors in place in meat factories to do testing? Did we learn nothing from the Tesco horse scandal?! The more I'm writing this the more it's hitting me that Kitty is full on mental. Obviously I knew when reading it she wasn't right in the head but holy cow...

Overall I would rate this book a 2.5/5 stars. It had some good bits but as you can tell from my answers to these questions, there's just too many plot holes for me to enjoy this book anymore.
